This depiction of the aftermath of the Battle of Fort Macon provides a view of the structure of the fort. This view of the Battle of Fort Macon shows Union vessels off the coast bombarding Confederate positions. In the 1862 Battle of New Bern, shown above, the Union acquired a stronghold in coastal North Carolina that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the war. The vessels of the Burnside Expedition, depicted above in rough seas, put most of coastal North Carolina under Union control in 1862.
